York Minster, Great East Window DD1, God as Alpha and Omega
Before
About
This panel, from the very apex of the Great East Window, sets out the theme of this, the largest window in the building, and the largest medieval window in Britain. God holds open a book on which is written in Latin ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’. The ambition of the subject matches the scale of the window, for it concerns the beginning and the end of all things. In common with all the other panels in the tracery openings, the outer edges of had been badly damaged and the painted and coloured glass had been patched with a broad white border. In the current conservation programme, it has been decided to replace the white borders with coloured glass, restoring the impact and legibility of the figure when viewed from a distance.
