As part of the conservation project for the Great East Window of York Minster, the panels are dismantled from their lead matrix. This lead was inserted during the 1950's restoration of the window and is very thick and heavy, often obscuring details on the glass and making the panels appear very dark. The lead is carefully removed from each panel, and conservators protect themselves from any lead dust by wearing protective clothing and carrying out the work below an extractor fan.
